The attendance of the public at the opening ceremony numbered about 5000, the galleries being chiefly occupied by ladies. On the arrival of the vice-regal party at the dais the musical ceremony was commenced, Signor Giorza conducting. The cantata was performed by about 800 voices, composed of members of the Sacred Choral Association and of the Civil Service Musical Society, and including over 200 children under Mr. Fisher's superintendence. The instrumentalists, under the leadership of Signor Ortori, numbered about fifty, and Mr. Broadhurst presided at the organ. |
