Press, Volume LXII, Issue 12419, 5 February 1906, Page 8: (From a series 'Players and Singers of the Seventies' by G.R.H.) Still cohtinuing my recollections of the principal members of the stock company supporting Mr Hoskins. Miss Docy Mainwaring (Mrs H. N. Douglas) was another clever member of the company, and she excelled in low comedy parts. One of the characters of which she was exceedingly proud was that of Biddy Madigan the principal keener in The Shaughran.' In the scene of the wake, where Conn is laid out in state, and the women assemble to 'keen,'' or in English cry, over the corpse, Miss Mainwaring led the dismal chorus and, being Irish herself, did her work with such zest and zeal that Mr Wheatleigh, the American actor who was acknowledged as the finest Conn of his time, presented her at the end of the season with a gold locket, bearing the inscription, ''From Conn to the Champion Keener.' She was especially good in Irish parta of the low- comedy type. |
