Description |
"Rameau's librettist La Bruère used the mythological characters of Dardanus and Teucer but the story is his invention. Nothing like it appears in the Greek myths. It uses many of the elements common to French opera, and indeed Shakespeare's plays: lovers on opposite sides of a war, each being unaware of the other's feelings, magical disguises, accomplishment of an heroic deed to win the girl and a happy ending. Corny it may all seem, but within the twists and turns of the story there are timeless themes of war, love, catastrophic events and heroism. Rameau's music expresses them so beautifully." |
