Description Cadmus, his family and priests have gathered in the temple of Juno for the marriage of Semele to his son Prince Athamas. The omens seem good, but Semele invents reasons for delay and pleads to Jupiter for help. Ino (Semele's sister), herself in love with Athamas, is also distressed.

Thunder is heard, and the flame on Juno's altar grows feeble. All flee except Ino and Athamas; but he takes her words to him as merely an expression of sympathy.

Cadmus returns and tells of the events he has just witnessed: Semele, with 'azure flames' around her head, was snatched heavenward by 'an eagle of
