Description |
"Ian Judge's production of Gounod's theatrical masterpiece...Judge seizes the melodramatic tale pilfered from Goethe of demonic lust in
pursuit of a mordant, religiously inclined innocent and milks it for every moment of old-fashioned, presentational flair...it is Judge's distinctive twists to the set pieces that are memorable. Rather than the traditional death and salvation of Marguerite in prison, he ends with a nod to the Marat/Sade play. We are given a vision of a godless world that is not so much governed by the devil as a lunatic asylum awash with uncontrollable human idiosyncrasies." |
